Founded in 2011, Bayside Basketball is built on a vision to elevate grassroots basketball by emphasizing back-to-basics skills and drills—while always keeping the game fun and inclusive. As the only RedCity club to produce a WNBL star, Tiana Mangakahia, we take immense pride in fostering talent and cultivating a culture of excellence.
Our strength lies in our unity—wearing our Black and Orange proudly—and in living by the values that define our club:
We are a not-for-profit, community-based basketball organisation, proudly operating at Cleveland High School and Bayview State School under the umbrella of RedCity Roar Basketball Association.
Our club competitions run during school terms, with most junior games played on Saturday mornings. Weekly training sessions are held in the afternoons and evenings.
What would become Bayside Basketball first began in 2005 as Mango’s Basketball—founded by Terie and Cynthia Mangakahia. Inspired by their children’s love for the game, the Mangakahias built a club grounded in family values, teamwork, and inclusion.
Before the age of social media, recruitment was grassroots—done via letterbox drops. Families came together on Saturday mornings at the YMCA courts in Victoria Point to form the first teams. Simplicity reigned: players wore donated singlets with Mango’s shorts, hoops lacked nets, and scoreboards were just flip charts with battery-powered timers.
The Mangakahia family were involved in every detail. Cynthia ran “The Desk,” organizing clipboards and scoresheets, while game fees were stored in a humble pencil case. The Mangakahia children refereed, Terie calmly managed games, and his parents manned the BBQ—making post-game chats a tradition. Three generations came together, turning basketball into something more: a family.
The club flourished, soon rebranding to the Bayside Bombers and joining Basketball Queensland with representative teams. By 2011, programs expanded to include Beginner and Advanced Biddy Ball, and the club fielded over 20 teams across five age divisions.
In the same year, Terie and Cynthia passed the torch. The club was restructured into the Bayside Basketball Association, with a new committee taking the reins—ensuring the club's future was bright while its values remained intact.
In 2012, the Mangakahia Award was established to honour a player who embodies the heart of Bayside Basketball—selflessness, sportsmanship, and community spirit. It celebrates those who lead by example, on and off the court.
The Coaches Award recognises a coach who goes above and beyond—someone deeply committed to player development and the club’s values. These are individuals who lead with integrity, step in where needed, and build a positive and inclusive environment for all.
From humble beginnings to a thriving community hub, Bayside Basketball remains dedicated to fostering a positive, family-focused basketball environment. Through grassroots development and representative opportunities, we empower young athletes to grow their skills, build lasting friendships, and thrive on and off the court.
Welcome to Bayside Basketball—where passion meets community.
