💡 Why this matters: Accurate profiles make it easier to identify the right parent, coach or manager and keep club communications organised.
Understanding Slack Channels

Slack channels are organised around the season, your club role and your team. This helps everyone find the right information and keeps conversations organised throughout the season.

ChannelPurpose
Season Name and YearClub-wide updates, announcements and general information for the season.
Managers – Season Name and YearCommunication for team managers, including administration, coordination and club updates.
Coaches – Season Name and YearCoaching information, resources and discussions relevant to the season.
Your relevant age group team – Season Name and YearYour team's channel for training, game details, availability and team-specific communication.
Example team channel
U14B Bombers – Season Name and Year

This channel is for members connected to the U14 Boys Bombers team and keeps their team communication in one place.

💡 Tip: Choose the channel that matches your message. Use your team channel for team updates, the coaches or managers channel for role-specific matters, and the season channel for club-wide information. You will only see channels that you have been added to.
Tagging people

Use mentions to draw attention to a message. Type the @ symbol and select the correct person from Slack's suggestions.

MentionWhen to use it
@PersonNotify one specific member when you need their input or action.
@hereNotify members who are currently active in the channel; use sparingly.
@channelNotify everyone in the channel, subject to Slack permissions and notification preferences; reserve for important messages.
Example

Hi @Kurt, can you please confirm Sunday's training arrangements?

💡 Good practice: Tag the right person rather than notifying an entire channel unnecessarily.
Replying in threads

Threads keep replies under the original message, so channel conversations remain easy to follow.

1
Find the message you want to respond to.
2
Choose Reply in thread (tap or hover over the message to see the option).
3
Type your reply in the thread rather than creating a new channel message.
Coach: Can everyone confirm availability for this weekend?

Team Manager (thread reply): All confirmed from our team, thanks!

Managing notifications

Stay informed without being overwhelmed. In Slack, open your profile menu and find Notifications to adjust your preferences.

  • Keep alerts enabled for direct messages and mentions.
  • Watch important club announcement channels.
  • Mute less relevant or particularly busy channels where appropriate.
  • Set a notification schedule if you do not want alerts at certain times.
💡 Recommended: Keep the channels carrying important Bayside updates visible and avoid using @channel for routine discussions.

  • Keep messages respectful, positive and professional.
  • Use the relevant channel and reply in threads when continuing a discussion.
  • Acknowledge important messages with a reply or reaction.
  • Mention only the people who need to act.
  • Respect volunteer time and avoid unnecessary notifications.
  • Do not post sensitive player or family information in general channels. Use the club's approved private communication processes instead.
